  • 2.25 teaspoon instant yeast ensures a quick rise for that fluffy crust.

  • 3 tablespoon butter (melted) gives richness and a lovely golden color to your crust.
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil keeps the dough tender and moist.

  • 1 teaspoon oregano (dried) provides that classic Italian flavor profile.
  • 1 teaspoon salt enhances all the flavors in your sauce.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • saucepan
  • cast-iron skillet

Method

Making the Pizza
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, and yeast. Pour in the warm water, melted butter, and olive oil, then mix until a messy dough forms.
  2. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.
  3. While your dough rises, make the sauce! In a saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the garlic until fragrant, then add the crushed tomatoes, sugar, oregano, and salt. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Once risen, grease a cast-iron skillet with a bit of olive oil. Press the dough into the bottom and up the sides of the skillet, ensuring an even layer.
  5. Start with a generous layer of mozzarella cheese, followed by your choice of Italian sausage or pepperoni. Spoon the simmered tomato sauce evenly over the top, then finish with a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese.
  6. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Bake the pizza for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy. Allow it to rest for 10 minutes before slicing to let the flavors meld.
